Recognising the women of the capital, borough by borough

"Herstory is a term for history written from a feminist perspective and emphasising the role of women, or told from a woman's point of view."

Reclaiming the lost stories of women

There is much work to be done in recognising and honouring pioneering women - not just in London, but worldwide. The list of trailblazing women throughout history is endless, and it is time we start highlighting their contributions.

London's documented history spans over 2,000 years, yet the stories that have been told largely focus on the activities of men in the public sphere - in war, politics, diplomacy, and administration. Women's roles and accomplishments have been minimised or ignored, with their portrayals often limited to stereotypical domestic positions like wives, mothers, and mistresses. This systemic exclusion and misrepresentation of women's historical impact must be addressed.

Over the course of history, women's significant contributions in fields such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, literature, medicine, politics, and economics have often been overlooked or undervalued.  The feminist movement has driven critical societal changes since the late 19th century. Key achievements include securing voting and property rights for women, broadening the public discourse to address issues of sexuality, the workplace, reproductive rights, and legal inequalities. Additionally, the movement has challenged patriarchal structures and cultural practices present throughout society.

Women's history remains an important area of research, and there is a need to reshape the dominant historical narrative to restore women's rightful place in history.
