The summer of 2019 in London is typically wet, with three solid days of rain and storms. After a messy divorce, Charlie has recently moved back to the city and now resides at the Barbican Estate with housemates Finn and Robyn. Reluctantly leaving her career at the Environment Agency, Charlie has taken a job covering the square mile for an online news organisation -
a far cry from her previous environmental work. Struggling with the change of pace and missing her old job, the slow-flooding streets and earthquake tremors felt in the city have reignited Charlie's passion for geology. With the impending hurricane, storm surge, and earthquake tremors converging, she realises this perfect storm could bring devastating flooding to London and the surrounding low-lying areas along the River Thames. While many have already been evacuated, Charlie, Finn, and Robyn must decide whether to seek refuge in the tall towers of
the Barbican or brave the traffic jams and overflowing rivers to reach the safety of the
Hampstead hills and watch their beloved city flood.
"...In about an hours' time, the surge will reach Canvey Island and
shortly after that it will reach the Kent/Essex Strait and
then the Thames Estuary, one of the largest inlets in Great
Britain and a major shipping route for oil tankers,
container ships and ferries. The impact of the surge
funneling into the estuary will be devastating for areas on
both the north and south sides of the Thames and the City
of London. What is a 4-metre surge at the estuary could
become a 6 or 7-metre surge by the time it reaches the
Isle of Dogs peninsula…”
"Wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this book because of the technical details involved but they were necessary in providing the build up to the storm that hit London. The characters are very different and have their own stories to deal with while battling nature. "
"Right from the start of Storm London I was captivated. The level of research the author has done is remarkable and balanced enough for it not to seem like a geography lesson. It didn't take away from the story line. I was taken on the journey of the storm. It highlighted the lessons of our actions we are making in regard to the environment we live in. Cleverly written. I look forward to more work by this author. "
"This book reads like a movie that I would love to watch. It is a chilling reminder that we have no control over Mother Earth..."
"As torrential rain, a massive storm surge and earthquakes threaten the East Coast of Britain, the City of London prepares itself for possible flooding and hopes the Thames Barrier can protect the city and it’s residents. But it wouldn’t be a good book if everyone just got a bit wet for a while then life went back to normal, would it! The situation starts to deteriorate rapidly and without giving too much away, it doesn’t end well! Obviously a lot of research has gone into writing this book and the author knows London extremely well as I think every district, building of note and tourist attraction gets a mention at some point! Overall, I enjoyed the book although given the climate crisis we are facing at the moment, maybe this could be a glimpse into a not too distant scenario."
"I received a complimentary copy of this book from voracious readers. It is a beautifully constructed novel set in London , where the effects of global warming have finally hit. The historical aspects are very well researched, and there is enough of the fictional storyline to be interesting. It certainly made me think again!"
